Workshops We Offer

Our professional development workshops and training are for teachers, led by teachers. Seasoned educators from our Peaceful Schools NC community provide practical skills grounded in many years of experience. By design, our work with schools is focused on meeting their specific needs related to school climate.

Building the Conflict Resolution Toolbox

Conflict is a natural part of life for anyone. How do conflicts escalate? How do they de-escalate? What are some specific skills that can be explicitly taught to help us all navigate conflict when it arises? This workshop focuses on specific skills and lessons for our kids.

Audience: Educators, Students, Parents

Discipline to Support Growth and Responsibility

We believe that when students mess up, it’s an opportunity to learn and grow. With support of a trusted teacher, the process can even be transformative. This workshop presents the shift in mindset from punitive punishment to logical consequences. It explores models of discipline practices to help students make better choices moving forward.

Audience: Educators, Parents

Introduction to Restorative Practices

This workshop begins with an introduction of ‘what’ and the ‘why’. Why are schools beginning to use this approach? What are the benefits to our students and school communities? What are the essentials for getting started? We recommend our full day training to adequately prepare to use Restorative Circle for repairing harm. Consider this a step-one introduction.

Audience: Educators, Administrators, Board Members, Parents

The System of Bullying: Breaking The Cycle

We know that bullying occurs in every school. We also know that bullying is a system in which all participants have a role to play. In this workshop, participants learn about the roles in the system of bullying, how they can look in real life, and how to support our students in learning how to break the cycle of bullying.

KNOW, ADVOCATE, WITHSTAND

Workshop on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse: Offering this workshop means a community is taking a proactive step to create a school culture that decreases the vulnerabilities to sexual abuse while increasing a community’s social health, knowledge, and resilience. Workshops can be tailored to school boards and administration, for all staff that are in community with students, and for families. In addition, Peaceful Schools NC can help staff design a prevention curriculum which works best for each developmental stage of their students.

Audience: Educators, Administrators, Parents

Healthy Relationships: Respecting Boundaries and Consent

Two foundational elements of a healthy relationship are boundary setting and consent seeking. From the three-year-old learning to share a truck in the sandbox to a nine-year-old telling an aunt to stop patting their hair, from a middle school student asking for a kiss to a high school student sharing their thoughts about sexual activity within a romantic relationship — these are all examples of boundary setting and/or consent seeking skills needed in a healthy relationship. In this workshop, we examine definitions, discuss examples, and practice skills which are all designed to be shared in the classroom.

Audience: Students

Rehearsal for Life: Using Theater to Activate Conflict Resolution Skills

Using Theater of the Oppressed activities and strategies, this workshop offers participants practice in employing specific conflict resolution skills. After a quick overview of a few specific conflict resolving skills and the game-like methods for practicing them, participants will actively use theater games to ‘rehearse’ some of our toughest real-life scenarios. All skills and strategies are directly transferable to students in your classroom, peers on your faculty, and loved ones in life outside of school.

Audience: Educators, Students, Parents

Giving Kids Voice: Engaging Students in School-Wide Culture Shifts

Writing their own rules and agreements? Mentoring younger students? A robust advisory program? This workshop will delve into why these methods of seeking student voice and input work. We will discuss how engaging students in primary decisions and actions can help to shift the culture of your school to one of greater inclusion and kindness.

Mindfulness in the Classroom

In this workshop, teachers learn specific ways to practice mindfulness with their students. Whether it’s a unit on Yoga or just a mindful moment at the beginning of class, incorporating mindfulness impacts kids’ ability to more positively engage in their classroom activities. The benefits of mindfulness in education are well-documented. We’ll share these findings and some fun ways to bring it back to your students.

Activities To Build a Positive Classroom Community

When we think of a ‘good teacher’, we imagine a classroom that is healthy, supportive, and productive and feels like a learning community. How do we create this with our students? This workshop shares ideas, resources, and activities to bring that vision to life in the classroom. The focus is on building healthy relationships with and among your students. By creating a positive classroom environment, many discipline problems can be eliminated before they begin.
